A Map of the Chessboard

The Chessboard is a board in which Chess is played.

The Chessboard is 64 squares, half of them are light colored, half are dark. The columns of squares going up and down are called files. They are lettered a, b, c, d, e, f, g and h. The rows of squares going side to side are called ranks and are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8. When lining up the board to play, always remember "the bottom right square is always white". That means the square in the bottom right corner must be white. If not, the board is set up sideways.
